Ok, I'm slightly more coherent than I was last night, so I will put up my thoughts on the ep and also touch on the sensitive subject of Daddy Dearest. Here we go.
Hokay, let me get this out of the way: John loves his boys. To death. His boys love him and (Dean especially) would go to the ends of the earth for him. Dean and Sam are John's one weakness, he would die if it meant keeping them safe. With that said, let me try and explain my convoluted opinion of him.
This episode didn't give us a really complete view of the family. All it did was show their love. For example, my brother and I are constantly at each other's throats and truly can't stand one another many days. However, I love him dearly, and if he had been missing for six months and suddenly turned up, our reunion would probably go a lot like the Winchesters' - tears and hugs all around. That doesn't mean that everything is ok, that we're not horrible to each other, that we suddenly truly understand each other and will now live happily ever after. Sam and John are too different, despite their similar experiences, to live at peace with each other, despite their obvious mutual love.
I have said this several times to other people, and I will say it again: I don't think John is cut out to be a single father. With Mary, he would have been awesome, but this man was not made to handle loss well, and has made his whole life about that one night, dragging his sons along. Especially during 'Scarecrow' and 'Bugs', we got the impression that he was and had been a very militaristic man, not the loving, supportive parental figure that Sam craved. He's a Marine, not a caretaker. Love or no, he's not completely what his boys need.
This is the point that really bugs me: he says that he understands Sam's need to kill the thing that murdered Jess, but he won't let Sam or Dean have any part in actually tracking the thing, and I can bet that if he finds the demon, he won't call and tell them. You can look at it like he's protecting his sons, but I kinda see it as him selfishly wanting to keep the revenge to himself. And even though Sammy understands his father's need and has made a point of not making his whole life revolve around that particular demon, if John didn't let him help with the hunt, I think it would create an unbreachable schizm between the two. Along those same lines, if he really was keeping information to protect his boys, he's more of an idiot than anyone has guessed. The thing is obviously connected to their family, Sam especially, in some way that we don't know yet, and Dean and Sam need all the information they can get just to stay one step ahead and not become its next victims. So, in conclusion, on this topic he's either selfish or a complete ignorant bufoon.
And that would basically sum up my opinion. I will reiterate that I can see that there is so much love in the family. But there are also some points where John has failed badly.
Now, onto the full episode opinion.
Oh HELL, was this an awesome ep. Nicki Aycox is awesome as a villian, she seems to be the only one besides Jeffery Dean Morgan who can really keep up with Jensen and Jared and has real staying power.
The whole first scene is kinda starting to annoy me, with the helpless person (usually female) becoming hysterical at something they don't know is there and all the electricity failing. However, the shadow killer thing was awesome.
The scene where they were mechanic people cracked both me and my dad up. We're both theater lovers and he's a lawyer, so Dean making jokes about credit card scams tickled us, and the whole thing about Sam being "cute" in Our Town (which is a bitching play) made both of us laugh, because it's not cute at all, it's sad. Dean connecting the dots was kinda cool too, most people wouldn't have even thought that such a brutal murderer would bother making a pattern with the blood. Great thinking on his part!
I love how they introduced Meg. Her and Dean just would be bound not to get along even if she wasn't a demon. I did feel really sorry for Dean though, when Meg was going off at him; he had a pretty dejected look on his face. And then Sam having to run off and do damage control... it was wonderful.
Sam watching Meg and getting called a pervert was priceless. Him following her like a stalker *shakes head*. Never knew ya had it in you, Sammy boy. And I freaking wanna know who she's talking to in that bowl! Seriously, I'm gonna hurt someone!
Then there's the whole part about Dean and Sam getting ready to kick Meg's ass and Sammy telling Dean that he'll go back to college. That scene broke my heart, simply because Dean was being so unrealistic. He can't keep on hunting forever, because like it or not, the credit card scams will catch up with him, no matter how good he is (so says the high and mighty lawyer dad). He also has some serious delusions about Sam and John living happily ever after. I have trouble seeing how he's convinced himself that everything will go back to normal once they find their dad and kill the demon that started the whole hunt. Sam's line that he would do anything for his brother, but that Dean will need to let him go might be a foreshadowing to something (apart from the fact that I almost died seeing the tears in both their eyes after that). Maybe Dean will have to let his brother go, but it won't be leaving for Stanford. God, the love those two hold for each other just breaks my heart. It's obvious that they've really only got one another, since John's not ever been a confidante or friend. I hope Sam can convince Dean that him leaving for college isn't the abandonment Dean thinks it is.
This next scene was the one that made all Sam/Meg shippers happy. There's obviously some sexual tension, but it's not gonna blossom into anything except rape if Meg ever returns and makes another move. Hot, I must say.
And now we have... the ever-elusive John Winchester! I kinda wish Sam woulda smacked him when he greeted them, but I guess that kinda would've spoiled the moment, yah? So, now there's tears and hugs all around, and John finally shows that his heart is not completely ice. BUT! Did you notice that neither Sam or John said sorry. They acknowledged the fight as a stich in their relationship and one that will have to be talked about, but for the moment it could be pushed to the background. Who knows if it's going to continue to fester or if the whole 'kicking Sammy out of the house' thing will ever be addressed. That isn't done by a long shot.
When the Meg summoned the shadows to attack again and Dean screamed when John and Sam were ripped apart, I wanted to jump into the t.v. and give him a huge hug. He just saw his newly almost-reconciled family literally ripped apart and maybe killed. Probably just about killed him, seeing that. Sammy kicks ass and saves the day, and then John is able to walk away, which I hated. When he told Sam to trust him, Sam should've said that he couldn't because his father had abandoned them once before. But we'll see him again, and now Dean and Sam have to regroup and talk out some of the shit that happened, including what they want to do after the hunt's over, cuz Dean and Sam have some serious issues to work out with that.
That would be my opinion, so if anyone wants to counter it, just reply here!
