Oh. My.
That's really all I can say about this movie. It's absolutely incredible, in a bleak, bloody way.
SPOILERS behind the cut!
So I went to see the movie at the Charles. There were only about 10 people in the theater when the movie started and my dad and I were joking about this and that, probably disturbing the other people. Previews weren't that interesting, except for a Steve Carrell movie called Little Miss Sunshine. Then it was on to the movie.
The opening scene is a bloody shootout where we meet two of the three Burns brothers. The police finally kill everyone except for Charlie (Guy Pearce) and Mike (Richard Wilson), and we meet Ray Winstone's character, a police sergent by the name of Captain Stanley. Mr. Stanley presents Charlie (the older brother) with a proposition - if he goes and finds Arthur Burns, the eldest and the leader of the Burns gang, then Stanley won't hang Mikey from the noose on Christmas Day (nine days away).
Charlie accepts and goes to find Arthur in the cave hideaway, leaving Mikey in the care of the Austrailian police (not a wise decision, seeing as the brothers and their gang are wanted for the horrible murder and rape of the local Hopkins family). He comes in contact with bounty hunter Jellon Lamb - played by John Hurt - who is also hunting his brother. Knocking out the hunter after some scintilating word games, Charlie continues on his way. Camping for the night, Charlie wakes up to find his horse dead and then to get speared through the chest by the local Abborigines.
Mike, meanwhile, has been having an awful time of it. He was shot in the upper arm during the opening shootout and has been harrassed by police and townspeople alike. Eden Fletcher (David Wenham) is the main man of the town and after bullying Captain Stanley, orders Mike to be given 100 lashes with the cat-o'-nine-tails. They only make it up to forty before Mrs. Stanley (Emily Watson), who convinced her husband to allow the whipping, faints and the whipper himself is too sickened at the effect of lashes on Mike to go on. Mike is cut down and the doctor tends to him. It doesn't look good though.
Charlie has found his brother and been healed by the Abborigine woman who runs with the Burns gang. He stays several days, lying about Mike's whereabouts and trying to gather up the courage to kill Arthur but can't. He finally confesses where Mike is after Jellon Lamb finds the hideout and is killed, and the whole gang rides to town disguised as soldiers. They break into the prison and Charlie frees Mike, running away with him to the wild outside the town while Arthur and a lackey go to visit the Captain.
Arthur and said lackey Samuel Stoat break into the Captain's house. Arthur beats the man while Stoat holds Martha Stanley captive. Arthur calls him in and Stoat rapes Martha while Stanley is forced to watch.
Charlie holds Mike's body, crying. Mikey died right after Charlie freed him. He and the Abborigine man who runs with the Burns' bury Mike, but the native blames Charlie for Mike's death because Charlie took Mike and left the gang after the rape and murder to the Hopkins family. Charlie goes to the Captains house and finds his brother and Stoat. He shoots Stoat in the head and then turns and shoots his brother. He refuses to continue the gang work. Arthur stumbles out of the house and Charlie follows, finding him sitting and watching the sunset. They say their goodbyes and Arthur finally dies.
Fade to black.
Whew! So that's the main summary of the movie. I personally loved the devotion between Mike and Charlie. Danny Huston, who plays Arthur, was absolutely fantastic - a true psychopath. The movie was incredibly violent at points, and then followed by long periods of non-violence. The final scene with Mike and Charlie nearly had me blubbering like a baby.
These thoughts are very disjointed, I know, but I just saw the movie and still have to process it's awesomeness. Fala out.

Heylo!
Date: 2006-07-12 03:25 pm (UTC)From:Also, that film sounds absolutely amazing. Unfortunately cause of the stupid rating system I'll have to wait for the DVD. However, I do know Nick Cave is behind that film and he is my new obsession musically.
